The Puy-de-Dôme (±90 km)
Are you confortable on a mountain with phenomenal view, then the Puy-de-Dôme is just the right place to visit. On an altitude of 1465m you can strawl and admire the view to all quarters of the compass. For example to the west you have a view on the Massif du Sancy, while straight east you can admire the city Clermont-Ferrand from above.
The "black" cathedral is well recognizable. When you are there under the best weather conditions, its even possible to see the Mont Blanc. The view is covering 11 departments!
The Puy-de-Dôme has te be climbed on foot or you can take the electric train. The ride with the cogwheel train gives you a view on the surroundings while the train is slowely seeking its way around the old volcano. The train is operating the whole year regardless the weather conditions. Multiple times a year the train is also operating in the evening. To climb the volcano on foot you need to be in reasonable shape.
On the top there are several hiking trails that take you around the summit. The reconstrcution of the temple of Mercure is at full throttle. While walking around the summit you can obtain a very good overview on the chain of old vulcanos. Everywhere the craters are clearly visible. By the way; the Puy-de-Dôme itself is a craterless volcano a so called stratovolcano, just like for example the Petit Suchet.
In the amusent park Vulcania all is dedicated to the volcanos. The park is offering the whole family a fun and educational day.
